Environmental Monitoring and Early Warning: Distributed Sensing on SG100

City administrators set out to build an early warning grid for air quality, flood risk, and heat islands—critical for public health advisories and climate adaptation. The Mofiu SG100 offered a ruggedized, protocol-agnostic gateway that could sit on street furniture, rooftops, and riverbanks, binding heterogeneous sensors into a coherent, secure fabric.

Particulate, NO2, and ozone analyzers connected via RS485, while ultrasonic river level sensors and micro-weather stations used RS232 or Ethernet depending on vendor. The SG100’s digital input captured threshold contacts from independent flood sirens and rain gauge tippers; its digital output triggered local beacons and relays that activated portable pumps or closed park access gates when conditions deteriorated rapidly.

Dual-SIM cellular ensured continuous reporting across diverse microclimates, including canyon streets notorious for radio shadows. The SG100’s link management gave precedence to threshold-crossing events and compressed alarm payloads during bandwidth scarcity. Bulk model inputs—minute-by-minute telemetry—synced opportunistically when RF conditions improved, preserving the fidelity of the city’s predictive models.

Security remained nonnegotiable. Hardware secure boot validated firmware states on each power cycle. IPSec tunnels protected environmental data streams in transit, and OpenVPN enabled ephemeral, audited access for calibration contractors. Sensor subnets were isolated from site Wi‑Fi or camera networks, constraining attack surfaces at each mast or enclosure.

Interoperability made scaling possible. By converting mixed serial protocols to standardized DNP3 or IEC104 over TCP, the SG100 presented a uniform upstream interface to the city’s analytics platform. As additional sensing modalities came online—soil moisture, leaf wetness, and thermal cameras—the SG100 absorbed them without bespoke middleware. When OEMs retired older devices, the city’s upstream integrations remained stable.

The program delivered material public benefits. Hyperlocal heat advisories targeted vulnerable neighborhoods with cooling center activations. River level warnings engaged mechanical interventions minutes earlier, reducing property damage. Air quality alerts tied to school sports policies were triggered with unprecedented reliability. Crucially, during a severe storm that downed a carrier’s sector, uninterrupted alarms flowed via the alternate SIM, and the digital output tripped flash beacons at riverside parks, keeping residents away from danger.

By embracing the SG100’s resilient connectivity, secure foundation, and protocol dexterity, the city established a future-proof environmental nervous system—primed for integration with urban planning, public health, and climate resilience strategies.
