Urban Air Quality and Construction Impact Monitoring

A city’s environmental department needed defensible, real-time evidence to manage air quality and noise impacts from multiple construction corridors. The challenge was to integrate certified particulate sensors, VOC analyzers, weather stations, and acoustic meters from different vendors—some serial, some IP—into a secure, uniform reporting pipeline with per-corridor alerting and actionable insights.

The Mofiu SG100 provided the field-side backbone. Its dual Ethernet ports connected PM2.5/PM10 analyzers and noise meters, while RS232/RS485 onboarded legacy instruments without field protocol gateways. With built-in IEC101-IEC104 and DNP3 conversion, telemetry streamed into the existing SCADA and compliance dashboards in standardized formats. Digital inputs captured enclosure tamper and calibration door opens; digital outputs drove beacon lights at sites exceeding thresholds to prompt immediate mitigation (e.g., dust suppression).

Security controls anchored evidentiary integrity. Hardware secure boot enforced trusted firmware; IPsec/OpenVPN tunnels protected data in transit, satisfying chain-of-custody requirements for regulatory proceedings. The SG100’s link management tuned QoS to prioritize threshold breaches and calibration events over routine samples. Dual-SIM redundancy countered urban cellular congestion, particularly during peak commuter hours or large events when one carrier saturated.

The city configured report-by-exception logic so that steady-state conditions used low-bandwidth summaries, while exceedances triggered high-frequency sampling and alerts to site supervisors. Ethernet-connected cameras provided snapshot corroboration for dust plumes and idling violations. Through serial reach-through, technicians updated analyzer firmware and performed diagnostics without rolling a service truck, minimizing downtime and enabling calibrated comparisons across corridors.

A mid-project innovation involved dynamic mitigation. When wind direction shifted toward sensitive receptors, the SCADA issued messages over IEC104 through the SG100 to activate on-site misters via digital outputs. Noise monitors signaled work-hour violations, with the router ensuring timestamped, tamper-evident records. The city’s legal team cited the authenticated, encrypted transport to defend citations, while contractors appreciated real-time visibility to correct course quickly.

Results were immediate and quantifiable. Dust exceedances dropped by 38% after automated alerts and on-site beacons went live. Noise non-compliance periods shrank as crews adjusted operations based on live thresholds. The communications layer held firm: during a carrier outage near downtown transit works, SG100 health checks shifted traffic to the secondary SIM with no data loss. Monthly compliance packages included complete, cryptographically protected time series suitable for external audits.

By turning heterogeneous environmental instruments into a cohesive, secure, and fault-tolerant field network, the SG100 elevated urban environmental governance from ad hoc spot checks to continuous assurance. The city achieved cleaner air around construction corridors, faster mitigation response, and legally defensible data—without changing out proven sensors or adding unnecessary complexity.
