Securing Critical Oil & Gas Pipeline Infrastructure with Distributed Telemetry
Customer Profile:
A Midstream Oil & Gas Pipeline Operator
The Challenge: Securing Highly Remote and Critical National Infrastructure
Monitoring thousands of miles of natural gas pipelines is a logistical and security nightmare. Block valve stations and pressure monitoring points are located in extreme, uninhabited environments. The operator needed to extract continuous pressure, flow rate, and cathodic protection data from these remote sites. A delayed response to a leak could result in catastrophic environmental consequences. Cybersecurity was equally paramount, as these pipelines are classified as critical national infrastructure and are prime targets for cyber-attacks.
The Solution: Deploying Hardened, Cryptographically Secure Telemetry Nodes
The pipeline operator standardized their remote block valve telemetry panels using the MOFIU SG100-CatM1 Industrial Gateway.
Deep-Penetration Connectivity in Isolation: To maintain connectivity in extremely isolated areas lacking standard broadband coverage, the operator utilized the SG100's Cat-M1 capabilities, ensuring reliable, low-power data transmission from the most remote stretches of the pipeline to the central control room.
MOFIUTrust™ Edge Integrity Architecture: Recognizing the severe cybersecurity risks, the operator mandated the use of the MOFIUTrust™ framework. The SG100 utilizes its Hardware-Anchored Identity Core (silicon-level OTP) to authenticate itself to the network, preventing unauthorized hardware cloning. The integrated hardware processing engine accelerates WireGuard and IPSec VPN tunnels, ensuring that critical pipeline telemetry cannot be intercepted or manipulated by hostile actors without bottlenecking the low-bandwidth Cat-M1 connection.
Autonomous Operation in Extreme Climates: The SG100’s wide operating temperature range allows it to survive the brutal winter and summer extremes of the pipeline route. Operating efficiently on a 9-48 VDC input, the gateways easily tied into the remote sites' existing solar-charged 24V battery systems.
The Benefits: Total Pipeline Visibility and Mitigated Risk
The deployment of the SG100 provided the operator with a unified, cryptographically secure telemetry network. Engineers achieved real-time visibility into pipeline pressure dynamics across thousands of miles, enabling automated shut-off procedures at the exact moment a pressure anomaly was detected, thereby securing national energy assets.
