Advancing Urban Mobility Through Real-Time Traffic Light Controller Synchronization
Customer Profile:
A Metropolitan Department of Transportation (DoT)
The Challenge: "Urban Canyons" and Outdated Traffic Infrastructure
A major city struggled with crippling gridlock. Their traffic light controllers operated on isolated, pre-programmed timers that could not adapt to real-time traffic conditions or emergency vehicle routing. The DoT initiated a project to connect every intersection to a centralized intelligent traffic management system. However, laying fiber optic cable to every traffic cabinet was economically unfeasible. Furthermore, the metal traffic cabinets baking in the summer sun created extreme heat profiles, and the tall buildings created "urban canyons" that severely disrupted standard cellular signals.
The Solution: Retrofitting Intersections with the High-Performance MOFIU SG100-4G
The DoT deployed the MOFIU SG100-4G Industrial Gateway into hundreds of curbside traffic cabinets across the metropolitan area.
High-Speed 4G LTE and Dual Ethernet Routing: To handle the continuous stream of traffic controller data, the city selected the SG100 equipped with a robust 4G LTE module. The gateway utilizes its two 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports to connect directly to both the legacy traffic controller and a secondary local diagnostic panel, acting as the primary secure router for the entire intersection cabinet.
Extreme Heat Tolerance and Secure Integration: Traffic cabinets act as ovens during the summer. The SG100’s industrial-grade components allowed it to operate continuously in these harsh thermal environments without the risk of CPU throttling. The device was securely mounted using the standard DIN rail kit, drawing stable power directly from the cabinet's industrial power supply.
System Integrity Protection: To protect the integrity of the city's traffic grid from unauthorized access or hacking attempts, the SG100 was configured using its built-in Stateful Firewall and MAC/IP Filtering. Every gateway establishes a highly secure, hardware-accelerated IPSec tunnel back to the DoT’s secure server, ensuring that only authenticated command center signals can alter intersection timing.
The Benefits: Adaptive Traffic Flow and Reduced Commute Times
By equipping their legacy traffic controllers with the SG100, the DoT successfully centralized their entire traffic grid. The reliable 4G LTE connection and robust industrial hardware allowed the central software to push real-time timing updates to intersections, creating dynamic "green waves" that improved overall urban traffic flow by 20% and allowed for immediate preemption routing for emergency response vehicles.
